1883 - Sanford Fleming's Standard Time scheme begins at midnight Atlantic Time in Nova Scotia and the eastern Seaboard of the US. Canada and the US agreed to divide the continent into four time zones, primarily to manage the nightmare of local times clashing with railway timetables. Other nations endorse idea at 1884 conference

1877 - North-West Territorial Council passes ordinance 'For the Protection of the Buffalo' in a failed attempt to slow the wanton destruction of the herds; provides for closed season on cows from Nov. 15 to Aug. 14; as many as 60 million buffalo once roamed the North American plains; by the late 1880s they are almost extinct.

1918 - On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month a formal truce, signed earlier that morning, at 5am by French Field Marshal Foch and the members of the German Armistice Commission in Compiègne France took effect to end World War I
